Privacy.

The short version

We collect what we need to sell you a seat, run the Residency, and answer you when you write to us. We also measure how this site is used, and we advertise — which means some of the tools below set cookies and, in Meta’s case, can be used to show you ads later. We don’t sell or rent your details to anybody, and you can turn the measurement and advertising off. How to do that is at the bottom of this page.

What we collect, and when

When you book a seat. Your name, email address, phone number and billing address, collected on Stripe’s checkout page. We also record which room you booked and what you paid.

When you write to us or fill in the enquiry form. Whatever you choose to tell us — your name, email, and what you’re building. That form is optional; nobody has to fill it in to book.

When you visit the site. Our host records ordinary server logs, including IP addresses, to keep the site up and defend it from attacks. We don’t build profiles from them and we don’t use them for marketing.

We never see your card number. Card details go directly to Stripe and are never stored by us or passed through our systems.

Who else handles your details

Only these, and only so the thing you asked for can happen:

• Stripe — payments, receipts and invoices. They hold your card details and billing information under their own privacy policy.
• Cloudflare — hosts this website and its server logs.
• Resend — delivers enquiry-form messages to our inbox.
• Google Fonts — the two typefaces on this site load from Google, which means Google sees your IP address when a page loads. No cookie is set and nothing else is shared.
• PostHog — measures how the site is used: pages viewed, buttons clicked, where people give up. We use it to fix the site, not to build a profile of you.
• Google Analytics — the same kind of measurement, reported to Google.
• Meta Pixel — tells Meta (Facebook and Instagram) that you visited, and which pages. This is what lets us advertise the Residency to people like you, and to stop advertising it to someone who has already booked. Meta can combine this with what it already knows about you.
• Circle — if you join the Guild, the Hall runs on Circle, which will hold your name, email and whatever you post there.

If you attend the Residency, your name and dietary or accessibility needs are shared with the venue and the team working that week, because that is the only way the week can run.

Analytics and advertising, plainly

Two of the tools above — Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel — are run by companies whose business is advertising. Sending them your visit is genuinely useful to us: it is how a very small operation finds eight people who want a working week in Michigan in January without wasting money shouting at everyone else. It is also a real thing we are doing with data about you, so we would rather say it in a sentence you can understand than bury it in a table.

Under some US state privacy laws, sharing browsing data with an advertising network like Meta counts as a “sale” or “share” of personal information, even though no money changes hands and we receive nothing for it. If you would rather we didn’t, turn it off — see below — or write to us and we’ll do it for you.

Your choices

• Turn it off on this site. Use the cookie controls when you first arrive, or open them again from the link in the footer, and decline the analytics and advertising cookies. The site works exactly the same either way — nothing about booking a seat depends on them.
• Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends a GPC signal, we treat it as you opting out of analytics and advertising, without you having to click anything.
• At the source. Google offers an opt-out for Analytics, and Meta lets you control ad targeting in your Facebook or Instagram settings.
• Just ask. Email us and we will opt you out and confirm we’ve done it.

What we will never do: put booking or payment behind a cookie, or make the site worse for people who say no.

Marketing email

If you book or ask us something, we’ll email you about that. We’ll only add you to a general mailing list if you ask to be on one, and every marketing email has an unsubscribe link that works immediately.

How long we keep things

Booking and payment records are kept as long as tax and accounting rules require. Enquiries are kept while they’re useful and then deleted. Ask us to delete something and we will, unless we’re legally required to keep it.

Your rights

Write to hello@thehostingguild.com and ask to see what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or get a copy. We’ll do it, and we won’t make you jump through hoops. If you’re in the UK or EU, these are rights you have under law; we apply them to everyone regardless.

Photography at the Residency

We film and photograph during the week — some of it becomes your own founder’s video and headshot, some of it we use in our marketing. Tell us you’d rather not appear in anything published and we’ll keep you out of it. See also the booking terms.

Children

Nothing we sell is for under-18s and we don’t knowingly collect their details.

Changes

If we change this, the date below changes with it. If a change is significant and you have a booking with us, we’ll email you rather than quietly editing the page.
